World Archery lifts restrictions, allows Russia to return under its flag and anthem

World Archery, the international governing body for archery, has lifted restrictions on Russian athletes, allowing them to compete under their national flag and anthem again. The decision comes despite more than 760 Ukrainian athletes and coaches having been killed since the war began in 2022.

World Archery, the sport's international governing body, has decided to lift the restrictions previously imposed on Russian athletes, which had barred them from competing under their country's flag and anthem at international events.

The decision means Russian archers will now be permitted to take part in competitions while representing their national symbols once again.

The move comes against the backdrop of more than 760 Ukrainian athletes and coaches having been killed since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022. This figure has been highlighted in connection with the federation's decision, underscoring the contrast between the governing body's action and the toll the war has taken on Ukraine's sporting community.

The decision follows a broader pattern among international sports federations, many of which have taken varying approaches toward Russian athletes' participation since 2022, when numerous organizations introduced restrictions or outright bans on Russian and Belarusian competitors representing their countries' flags.

World Archery's decision has drawn criticism, being viewed by some as a step back from the stance many in the international sporting community had adopted against Russia's aggression in Ukraine.
