Wakefield stun Wigan to reach maiden Grand Final

Wakefield Trinity produced one of the season's biggest shocks, crushing Wigan Warriors 33-6 in the Super League play-off semi-final to reach their first ever Grand Final.

The first half was tightly contested, with Wakefield holding an 8-6 lead at the break. The turning point came when Wigan centre Adam Keighran was sin-binned in the second half — during his absence, the visitors crossed for three unanswered tries. In total, Wakefield scored 33 unanswered points after the break, leaving Wigan, who had opened the scoring through Brad O'Neill, unable to respond.

Tom Johnstone scored twice for Wakefield, with Jack Sinfield, Corey Hall and Ky Rodwell also crossing. Having played in the Championship as recently as 2024, the club has made rapid progress under ambitious owner Matt Ellis and experienced head coach Daryl Powell.

Wigan arrived at the match on a 16-game winning streak, having already secured the Challenge Cup and League Leaders' Shield, and were chasing a fourth consecutive Grand Final appearance. That run ended on home soil against a dominant Wakefield side.

The Grand Final will take place on 3 October, with Wakefield facing Warrington Wolves, who have lost all four of their previous Grand Final appearances. Whatever the result, a new champion will be crowned for the second year running.

The match also carried personal significance for Jack Sinfield, whose father, Sir Kevin Sinfield, won seven titles with Leeds Rhinos and last played in a Grand Final 11 years ago. Sir Kevin is set to deliver the match ball ahead of next Saturday's final as part of his ongoing fundraising for motor neurone disease charities.
