Air traffic was suspended at multiple airports in Indonesia on Sunday following a volcanic eruption. In total, seven airports were affected, including both of the capital Jakarta's airports, where takeoffs and landings were temporarily banned.
Safety concerns
Volcanic ash poses a serious hazard to aircraft, as it can damage engines and reduce visibility, prompting aviation authorities to temporarily close the airspace around the affected airports to prevent accidents.
Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for frequent volcanic and seismic activity, meaning such disruptions to air travel are not uncommon in the country.
