Volkswagen Prepares German Recall of Electric Cars Over Battery Fire Risk
German carmaker Volkswagen is preparing a recall of several thousand electric vehicles because manufacturing defects in some battery cells may cause overheating and fire. In the US, more than 22,000 ID.4 cars are already being recalled over a similar problem.

German carmaker Volkswagen is preparing to recall several thousand electric cars, because manufacturing defects in some battery cells could cause the high-voltage battery to overheat and catch fire. German media report this, citing information from the manufacturer. If the recall is confirmed, it will affect owners whose vehicles may contain faulty battery cells.
Which models may be affected
The planned recall covers the Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4 as well as the Cupra Born, all built in 2023 and 2024. The exact list of affected vehicles has not yet been officially confirmed.
The situation in the US
In the United States, more than 22,000 Volkswagen ID.4 cars are being recalled for a similar reason. Until a technical fix is available, owners of these vehicles are subject to a charging limit of 80%. No such restriction has been confirmed in Germany so far.
What owners should do
Owners are advised to contact a Volkswagen or Cupra dealer and use the vehicle identification number (VIN) to check whether their car is included in the recall. Where necessary, the battery will be inspected, damaged modules replaced and software updates installed.
