Harijs Vītoliņš will take charge of Latvia's national hockey team as head coach for the sixth time at next spring's World Championship. He noted that the team keeps setting itself higher goals each year, meaning preparation for the tournament must match that ambition.

Creative play, but no tolerance for mistakes

As a former hockey player himself, Vītoliņš says he supports creativity and initiative from his players on the ice. However, he draws a clear line between the training process and major tournaments — at the World Championship, there is no longer room for mistakes.

Because of this, Vītoliņš stressed that the tournament cannot be treated as a learning environment for young players still developing their top-level skills. In his view, the World Championship is a stage where players must already show polished abilities and experience, rather than learn through mistakes during games.
