A 39-year-old Michigan man used money earned from returning empty cans to buy a lottery ticket and won $500,000. He plans to pay off his mortgage and take a vacation with the winnings.
A man in Michigan, who chose to remain anonymous, unexpectedly became half a million dollars richer after spending money he earned from returning empty cans on a lottery ticket.
The 39-year-old winner told Michigan Lottery officials he has a regular Sunday habit of returning empty cans and using the refund money to buy instant lottery tickets. This time he bought a "Stampede Payout" instant ticket at a CVS store in South Lyon.
That evening after dinner, he sat down to scratch off the ticket. When he saw he had won $500,000, he started screaming and jumping with excitement. He said his hands were shaking so badly from the shock that he couldn't scan the ticket in the lottery app right away and had to try again later.
The man said the feeling of financial freedom is amazing. He plans to use the winnings to pay off his mortgage in full, go on vacation, and treat friends to dinner.
According to UPI, players of the Michigan Lottery's "Stampede Payout" instant game have won more than four million dollars in total so far.
