Vilnius to host first River Festival along the Neris this July
Vilnius will hold its first River Festival on July 25, stretching along the Neris riverbanks, featuring music, sports, and the Red Bull Tandemynės water cycling competition.
The city of Vilnius has announced its first River Festival, scheduled for July 25, which will run along the banks of the Neris River from the Vingis Park bridge to the Žirmūnai bridge. The event coincides with the feast day of St. Christopher, the patron saint of Vilnius, and will offer a full day of music, sports, outdoor cinema, creative workshops, author meet-and-greets, book club gatherings, family activities, and community events spread across several sections of the riverbank.
Active pursuits will feature prominently, including sports sessions, night-time kayaking on the Neris, and a silent disco. The evening will close with a concert near the White Bridge. The headline attraction is billed as the first event of its kind in the Baltic states: Red Bull Tandemynės, a team cycling competition staged on the water, in which participants are judged not only on speed but on ingenuity – with the promise of improvised contraptions, comedy, and dramatic plunges into the river.
Vilnius mayor Valdas Benkunskas said the festival was an opportunity to reconnect the city with one of its defining natural features. "St. Christopher's Day is a good moment to turn back towards the Neris, which connects Vilnius not just geographically but through daily life, memories and the rhythm of the city," he said. "We want people to come to the river with intention, to spend time there, meet others, rest or be active."
