New Senior Schools Launch in Vidzeme, Inviting Older Residents to Learn and Connect
Senior schools called "Changing Life Stop" have started in Smiltene and Palsmane this September, offering residents aged 65+ practical digital, financial and social skills. The first sessions take place on September 28.
This September, new Senior Schools under the name "Changing Life Stop" began operating in the Vidzeme region, including in Smiltene and Palsmane. The initiative targets residents aged 65 and older who want to keep learning, stay socially active, and gain practical skills for daily life.
The first gathering in Smiltene is scheduled for September 28 at 10:30 at the municipal library, while participants in Palsmane will meet the same day at 14:00 at the local elementary school. Project coordinator Zane Bērza says interest has been strong and registrations are ongoing, with plans to expand the program next year to the towns of Ape and Rauna. In Palsmane, coordinator Inita Zaharčuka notes that around twenty local residents have already signed up.
What the program covers
The curriculum is designed to help seniors become more self-sufficient — using digital tools safely, managing health and finances, and taking a more active role in community and economic life. It also includes a track on skills needed for the labor market, letting participants assess their professional experience and learn about self-employment options.
Sessions are meant to be hands-on, combining lectures with workshops, group discussions, paired exercises, and individual support tailored to participants' knowledge levels. Building social connections and sharing experience are also key parts of the program.
The training runs for 12 months across two academic years, with the first stage lasting from September 1 this year through March 31, 2027, held twice a week for two hours per session. The initiative is carried out under the "Support for Social Entrepreneurship" project, administered by the Society Integration Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of Welfare. Those interested can register through the coordinators in Smiltene and Palsmane.
