Hundreds of Teachers in Vidzeme to Retire in Coming Years; Recruitment Remains Challenging
Over the next few years, hundreds of teachers in the Vidzeme region are expected to retire, leading to a severe shortage, especially in STEM subjects and foreign languages. Local municipalities call for greater state and local efforts to optimize the school network.

In Vidzeme municipalities, a significant shortage of teachers is anticipated in the coming years as a large portion of educators reach retirement age and leave the profession. Already now, ahead of the next school year, attracting new teachers to the region is difficult, despite various additional social guarantees offered by local governments.
The shortage is particularly acute for teachers of exact sciences (such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry) and foreign languages. Local authorities, observing the real situation in schools, emphasize that both the state and municipalities need to think more about streamlining the school network to address the impending staffing crisis.
Overall, it is estimated that the retirements could leave Vidzeme short of several hundred educators. Although municipalities try to attract new specialists with support measures like housing allowances and bonuses, these efforts have not yet been sufficient to meet demand.
