State Police have reported an incident in Ventspils where the quick actions of an apartment resident and passersby led to the capture of a suspected thief during a burglary.
The event unfolded when a man entered a first-floor apartment building. After checking and finding an apartment door unlocked, he went inside and took costume jewelry and a mobile phone. However, the resident, who had been in the garden, returned at that moment, grabbed the thief, and called for help. Hearing her cries, passersby assisted in holding the suspect until police arrived.
Officers took the man into custody and transported him to the police station. On Thursday, a court imposed pre-trial detention as a security measure. According to State Police representative Madara Šeršņova, the individual has previously been involved in several property-related crimes, including those involving violence. These offenses were committed while he was already serving a sentence of community service ordered by the prosecutor's office.
Police noted that the suspect's modus operandi is stealing specifically from unlocked homes. The investigation is ongoing. Under the Criminal Law, such a crime is punishable by up to five years' imprisonment, short-term imprisonment, probation supervision, community service, or a fine, with or without confiscation of property.
State Police reiterate their call for residents to secure their homes. Often, thefts occur because residents forget to lock doors or close windows when leaving or even while at home. They also advise against keeping valuables like handbags, wallets, and mobile phones in hallways. If large amounts of cash or jewelry are kept at home, investing in a quality safe is recommended.
