Latvia's State Chancellery has opened a new competition to fill its director position after the initial recruitment process failed to produce a suitable candidate. Compared to the first round, several requirements for applicants have now been eased.

The prime minister has suggested that the bar set for the first competition was disproportionately high, which unnecessarily narrowed the pool of potential candidates. The requirements have therefore been adjusted in hopes of attracting more applicants.

Experts weigh in

However, experts caution that the underlying problem may run deeper than the formal selection criteria. They point out that a key factor could be how appealing the position itself is to strong, experienced professionals — both in terms of the role's reputation and the political environment surrounding it.

The director of the State Chancellery is one of the most important positions in Latvia's public administration, and the prolonged vacancy raises questions about how to make the post more attractive to top-level specialists.
