Valmiera Theatre stages mask comedy "Laipotāji" inspired by "Othello"
On August 21, Valmiera Theatre will premiere a new contemporary mask comedy called "Laipotāji," blending motifs from Shakespeare's "Othello" with the everyday life of a Latvian folk dance group. The production was created by director and playwright Kārlis Krūmiņš.

The play is not entirely new to audiences, however. It first met viewers at the Valmiera Summer Theatre Festival, and is now becoming a permanent part of Valmiera Theatre's repertoire.
Shakespeare meets a folk dance ensemble
According to the production's creators, the play weaves together several seemingly unrelated elements. It draws on motifs from William Shakespeare's tragedy "Othello," which are combined with the everyday life and passions of a Latvian folk dance collective.
Alongside this, the production also touches on the absurdities of contemporary cultural policy and employs the playing principles of commedia dell'arte, traditionally built around masks and improvisation. This combination creates a distinctive genre synthesis, retelling serious tragic themes through the language of comedy and masking, set within an environment characteristic of Latvian culture – a folk dance ensemble.
Following its premiere on August 21, "Laipotāji" will remain part of Valmiera Theatre's ongoing repertoire.
