Wiring fire in Valka apartment, 15 emergency calls in Vidzeme region over three days
On Friday, electrical wiring caught fire in a small area of an apartment in a three-storey building in Valka, though the fire was out before firefighters arrived. The Vidzeme region recorded 15 emergency calls over three days, including five false alarms.
Latvia's State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) Vidzeme regional department received 15 emergency calls between August 14 and 17 — five involving fires, five involving rescue operations, and five that turned out to be false alarms.
On Friday afternoon, around 4 pm, firefighters were called to Rīgas Street in Valka, where electrical wiring had caught fire in a second-floor apartment of a three-storey residential building, covering roughly 0.2 square metres. The fire had already been extinguished before crews arrived at the scene.
Other incidents in the region
That same evening, shortly before 11 pm, a call came in from Ranka parish in Gulbene municipality, where household items were burning in a single-storey farm building over an area of 10 square metres. Work at the scene concluded around 1 am.
On Saturday afternoon, firefighters responded to Alsviķi parish in Alūksne municipality, where dry grass was burning over 1,000 square metres. The fire was extinguished within roughly 40 minutes.
On Sunday afternoon, a call came from Amata parish in Cēsis municipality, where forest ground cover was burning over 30 square metres, and in the evening from Stalbe parish, also in Cēsis municipality, where a single-storey residential house was on fire over 80 square metres. A person was injured in that fire. Work at the scene ended shortly after 2 am.
Across Latvia during this period, VUGD received a total of 166 calls — 47 for fires, including three forest fires, 64 for rescue operations, and 55 false alarms.
