Ukraine hit St. Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city, and the surrounding Leningrad region with drones overnight on October 18. According to Meduza, an independent Russian-language outlet based in exile, it appears to be the biggest Ukrainian strike on the region since the full-scale war began. One St. Petersburg resident died, and 15 other people across the city and the region were injured.

Sites damaged

In St. Petersburg, the damage affected an oil terminal at the port, the Ruchyi oil depot, a warehouse of the online retailer Ozon, a data center of the social network VK, and the Vostochnaya electrical substation. A cable-stayed bridge over the Korabelny shipping channel was also hit, as was an addiction treatment hospital on Vasilyevsky Island.

Residential buildings and dozens of cars in the city and the wider region were damaged too. The strikes set off numerous fires.

Coverage

Meduza has put together photos and videos showing the aftermath. They include images of the oil terminal, the Ozon warehouse, the VK data center, the Ruchyi oil depot, the bridge over the Korabelny channel, the Novoselye residential complex, and St. Petersburg on the morning after the attack.

The source material does not include comments from Russian or Ukrainian officials on the strike.
