US President Donald Trump and his allies have discussed pressuring lawmakers to pass a resolution annulling the two impeachment proceedings initiated during his first term, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources.

Such a resolution would allow Trump to claim a symbolic victory on an issue that has dogged him since his first term and would be part of broader efforts to burnish his presidential legacy. However, experts say it would carry no practical legal weight, as the US Constitution does not provide for overturning an impeachment.

"It has to be done because I did nothing wrong. It was a phony deal – it was a totally phony situation," Trump said when asked about the resolution during a phone call with the Journal this week.

According to informed sources, the measure is unlikely to be considered until November, after the midterm elections. Even then, multiple Republican House lawmakers believe it will be difficult to gather the necessary votes.

House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed he had discussed the resolution with Trump. Johnson added that he had more detailed conversations with some of the president's allies in legal circles.

"I think it's perfectly logical: the more evidence that comes out, the more we realize these truly were bogus impeachments," Johnson said.

He also said discussions about the resolution intensified about a month ago. Johnson stated that removing the impeachment from the record is "not a top priority" but is on his priority list.

Donald Trump is the only president in US history to be impeached twice, in 2019 and 2021. Both times the Senate acquitted him.
