Mixed weather in Latvia on Wednesday, with rain in places and an evening solar eclipse
Latvia will see changeable weather on Wednesday, with brief rain mainly in the eastern regions, while a partial solar eclipse will be visible in the evening. Daytime temperatures will reach up to +21C.
Wednesday's weather in Latvia will be shaped by the northeastern edge of an anticyclone, bringing variable cloud cover across the country. Brief rain showers are expected in places, mainly in Vidzeme, Latgale and Sēlija, while other areas will see clearer skies. Daytime air temperatures will range from +17C to +21C.
Winds will blow from the west and northwest, with gusts reaching 9-14 meters per second. In Riga, short-lived rain is possible during the day, though cloud cover should decrease by the afternoon. Gusts in the capital may reach up to 14 meters per second, with temperatures staying below +20C.
Solar eclipse expected in the evening
In the evening, when a solar eclipse will be visible, cloud cover is expected to thin out further. Temperatures at that time will range from +12C to +17C, while a gusty sea breeze will continue along the Vidzeme coast.
Early Wednesday morning, temperatures across the country ranged from +8C to +17C, with warmer readings along the Vidzeme coast and parts of the Kurzeme shoreline. On Tuesday, the highest temperature recorded was +21.6C in Daugavpils, while the strongest wind gusts, at 19 meters per second, were measured in Daugavgrīva.
August slightly drier than average so far
According to data compiled by the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, the average temperature over the first ten days of August was +18.5C, close to the norm. Rainfall, however, has been noticeably below average, at roughly 14.8 millimeters nationwide — about two-thirds of the usual amount for this period. The wettest area was Krāslava municipality, while the driest was Ventspils municipality.
