Trump says he has the right to seek a third presidential term

US President Donald Trump has again suggested at a rally in Iowa that he could run for a third term in 2028, although the Constitution limits presidents to two elected terms. His claims that the 2020 election was rigged have not been substantiated.

US President Donald Trump has once again floated the idea of seeking a third term in the White House in 2028, even though the US Constitution limits presidents to two elected terms. He made the remarks at a rally in the state of Iowa, according to a Euronews report updated on 23 October 2026.

Trump conceded that the law leaves little room for interpretation. Even so, he argued that he ought to be allowed to run again, claiming that the 2020 presidential election was rigged.

What the president said

According to the report, Trump said he had spent a long time studying the constitutional wording. Despite that, he insisted the election had been stolen from him, and he used this claim as the basis for his argument.

Fraud claims unproven

His allegations of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election have not been substantiated. The report does not say whether he has taken any formal steps toward a 2028 campaign.

The remarks bring renewed attention to the constitutional two-term limit on the presidency, which Trump himself acknowledged leaves little room for interpretation.
