According to Politico, citing five European diplomats and officials involved in closed discussions, the outlines of a potential deal are emerging. Trump wants to stabilize a framework ceasefire agreement with Iran and needs G7 allies' military capabilities to clear the Strait of Hormuz of mines. In return, European leaders expect Trump to back Ukraine against Russia.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed optimism after talks, saying discussions with Trump "instill a certain optimism." Earlier, Europe feared Trump might force Ukraine into territorial concessions, especially after his hour-long phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, during meetings, Trump unexpectedly told leaders the US is ready to reimpose strict sanctions on Russia's oil sector. "Russia must make a deal," Trump said.

G7 leaders indicated readiness to help with demining but under conditions. French President Emmanuel Macron stressed that sending ships would require a formal US request and consent from other parties, including Iran and Oman.

Earlier, on June 16, G7 leaders at the Evian summit agreed to increase pressure on Russia with new sanctions on oil and gas exports. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said all G7 countries see no desire from Russia to end the war. Trump also suggested he may not extend sanctions waivers for Russian oil, which were implemented in response to global price increases caused by the Iran war. Merz expressed optimism that European leaders and Trump have reached a common position on the war in Ukraine.
