Following the conclusion of the G7 summit, US President Donald Trump told reporters that he had 'very good talks' with both Russian ruler Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trump reiterated that he spoke by phone with the Kremlin leader and later met Zelenskyy in person on the sidelines of the summit, briefing the Ukrainian president on the call.

Trump said he believes both leaders want to do something to end the war, but they simply do not know how. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that all G7 leaders agree Russia is not showing a genuine willingness to make peace. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney noted that the United States' position on Ukraine is becoming more realistic.

On the sidelines of the G7 summit, Trump expressed readiness to support Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia in exchange for European allies' help in demining the Strait of Hormuz. The US president also reiterated that he is considering reinstating sanctions on Russian oil after the temporary exemption introduced amid high global energy prices caused by the conflict with Iran. Furthermore, Trump pledged to consider Ukraine's request for licenses to produce air defense systems.
