US President Donald Trump commented on the likely next British Prime Minister Andy Burnham during a press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Wednesday.

Trump described Burnham as "extremely liberal" and suggested that the successor would not open the North Sea for oil drilling, something the US president has long urged the British government to do.

When asked what he knew about Burnham, Trump replied that he had heard Burnham "was, perhaps, mayor of some city."

During the press conference, Trump again criticized NATO allies, including London, stating that "Britain is dying."

The next British prime minister is expected to face strained relations with the US president. Burnham previously criticized Trump, calling US politics "polarized" and "poisonous" during his election campaign in Makerfield this month.

As reported, on June 22, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation after the results of the by-election in the Makerfield constituency were announced, where Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham won. This victory paved the way for Burnham to stand for Labour leadership and, consequently, for prime minister.

On Tuesday, it was revealed that Starmer had held secret talks with his potential successor Andy Burnham.
