US President Donald Trump said on October 7 that he would deserve the Nobel Peace Prize, while admitting he has doubts about his chances, Reuters reports.

The winner of the 2026 prize will be announced on October 9. Trump said he does not know what the committee will decide, adding that it tends not to give the award to "people like him."

Repeated remarks

Since returning to the White House in January 2025, Trump has said several times that he merits the prestigious award. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, he said it was time he received it. He also said he was honored last year to receive a medal from its holder, who reportedly said nobody had deserved it as much as he did. In January this year, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado handed her Nobel Peace Prize medal to Trump.

Trump believes he should win for ending eight conflicts that he says he has brought about since returning to office. Leaders of Israel, Cambodia and Pakistan have said they nominated him, but this cannot be verified. Parties to some of the conflicts he says he resolved question the US president's diplomatic role, and fighting has flared up again in several regions, including Congo and along the Cambodia-Thailand border.

Unresolved issues

Trump has so far not managed to end Russia's aggression in Ukraine. US and Israeli strikes on Iran have grown into a seven-month conflict that has pushed up energy prices around the world and threatens Republican positions in the midterm elections.
