Toronto police chief Myron Demkiw said that 43-year-old Constable Marc Pinizzotto was shot while executing an early-morning search warrant in the northwest of the city and later died in hospital. The warrant was related to several shootings, including the one at the US consulate in March. Demkiw identified one suspect, 19-year-old Zara Jabbi, as still at large and considered armed and dangerous, urging anyone who sees him to call 911 immediately. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow expressed condolences, noting she has known the officer's mother for 20 years. In March, Toronto police reported that two men fired multiple rounds at the vacant US diplomatic building before sunrise. No injuries occurred. US Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra called the incident deeply troubling. Canada's federal police said the investigation would determine if the consulate shooting constituted a terrorist event.
