Students who already work at the Children's Hospital while studying have another chance to receive financial support. Applications are now open for the Nursing Science scholarships for the 2026/2027 academic year, and the programme is running for the second year in a row. The scholarship is worth €2,000 and is funded by the Future Support Foundation and Rietumu Banka.

Who can apply

The scholarships are intended for Nursing Science students of the University of Latvia, Riga Stradiņš University and Daugavpils University who work at the Children's Hospital. They must be studying successfully in their 5th to 7th semester, be actively involved in research and studies, and have positive recommendations from a mentor and the head nurse of their unit.

The scholarship is awarded for the entire academic year so that students can combine study with work at the hospital and develop their professional knowledge in practice. The programme also helps the hospital attract young specialists to units with the largest number of vacancies for care staff.

How to apply

Applications are accepted until 19 October, starting with an email to the address provided. The competition results are expected to be announced at the end of October.

Results of the first year

In the programme's first year, 10 Nursing Science students from the University of Latvia and Riga Stradiņš University received the scholarship while already working at the Children's Hospital. Each was awarded €2,000 for one academic year. All of them continue to work at the hospital.

Ieva Damberga, the hospital's clinical head nurse, says this shows that motivated and knowledgeable future nurses were selected. She stresses that, with a shortage of nurses in the national healthcare sector, every motivated future children's nurse is a benefit to children's healthcare.

Vineta Vilistere-Lāce, chair of the Children's Hospital Foundation board, thanked the supporters and noted that humanity matters in this profession alongside knowledge and professionalism. Jeļena Buraja, the scholarship ambassador, a council member of the Future Support Foundation and chair of the Rietumu Banka management board, encouraged student nurses to use the opportunity and take the next step in their professional development.
