Competing in the under-70-kilogram weight category, Gulbis defeated Romania's Robert Buzaș in the second round with a clear advantage.
Other Latvian Fighters Fall Short
The tournament proved less successful for Latvia's other boxers. In the under-75-kilogram category, Nords Rudens lost to Russia's Kirill Shinkar by a judges' decision of 2-3. Meanwhile, Kirils Šalkovskis, competing in the under-80-kilogram category, conceded defeat to Russia's Prokhor Startsev in the third round and was eliminated from the tournament.
Bronze Medal Last Year
At last year's European U-19 Championship, held in the Czech city of Ostrava, Latvian boxer Ņikita Prohovskis won a bronze medal in the under-85-kilogram category.
This year's European U-19 Boxing Championship in Loznica, Serbia, will conclude on Saturday. The tournament brings together 354 athletes from 36 countries.
