Red-carpet welcome for Xi, but not every wish granted

Chinese President Xi Jinping received a lavish welcome from Donald Trump during their summit, but the visit did not deliver everything Beijing had hoped for. The two countries agreed to extend the truce that paused their tariff war, but only by a few months — from November to January — far short of the roughly year-long pause China wanted while Xi waits out the remainder of Trump's presidency.

That short extension pushes major disputes over tariffs, China's dominance of rare earth supplies, and access to advanced US chips into another round of negotiations, suggesting Washington wants Beijing to deliver more before granting longer-term concessions.

Economic pressure at home

Xi faces a difficult domestic economic picture. Although China is exporting a record volume of goods, domestic consumer spending remains weak, youth unemployment stays high, and property prices have fallen in a country where 80% of people own their homes. Protecting export markets from damaging tariffs has therefore become increasingly important for Xi.

Taiwan and AI

Xi again described US arms sales to Taiwan as a red line and repeated his hope that Washington would maintain its position against Taiwanese independence. Trump has not publicly responded, though he previously delayed approval of a $14 billion arms package for Taiwan, calling it a useful negotiating chip.

The leaders also discussed artificial intelligence, though no concrete safeguards were announced — Xi only stressed that AI must always remain under human control.

The summit also confirmed that pandas Ping Ping and Fu Shuang will arrive in Atlanta within days, marking a resumption of China's panda diplomacy. Observers noted that one of Beijing's biggest wins may simply have been the optics: the extravagant welcome and state banquet helped project an image at home of Xi as Trump's equal, even as competition between the two powers remains intense.
