Residents of Latvia are scrutinising their regular expenses more carefully, and this is also visible in the mobile telecoms sector. According to data from Tele2, the number of customers choosing to insure their monthly mobile bills has doubled over the past year.

Who opts for insurance most often

The most active users of the service are people aged 31 to 40. They mostly live in Riga and the Riga region, as well as in Kurzeme.

The company's explanation

Tele2 says the growing interest shows that people want to protect themselves in advance against a situation in which unforeseen circumstances reduce their income and make it harder to pay for one of the basic necessities: mobile communications.

The company's commercial director, Raimonds Janševskis, stresses that communication services are no longer a luxury but a critical necessity of daily life. They allow people to work remotely, use public and financial services and keep in touch with loved ones. As a result, any disruption in paying mobile bills can cause immediate difficulties.

In his view, a twofold increase in a single year does not point to a new consumer fashion but to pronounced financial caution. People want assurance that in cases such as illness or job loss their basic needs will be covered and everyday expenses will be easier to meet.

The company attributes the trend to general economic uncertainty and rising living costs, which are prompting residents to assess their fixed daily expenses more pragmatically.
