Taylor Swift becomes most-awarded artist in MTV VMA history with 31 wins
Taylor Swift received the newly created Artist Director Honors at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, making her the most-awarded artist in VMA history with 31 total wins. The ceremony also featured performances by Madonna, Charli xcx and tributes to Dolly Parton and George Michael.
At Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards, Taylor Swift was presented with the newly established Artist Director Honors, recognizing artists whose behind-the-camera work has advanced the art of music video storytelling. The win brought her career VMA total to 31, moving her ahead of Beyoncé, with whom she had previously been tied at 30 apiece.
In her acceptance speech, Swift noted she has been involved in music videos for 20 years, contributing to roughly 60 of them, 18 of which she personally wrote and directed. During the broadcast she also premiered the video for her new single, "Patient Zero," which she directed and which stars Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson as mirror images of each other. The song is her first release since marrying Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce in July.
Other highlights from the night
The two-hour show, broadcast live from Los Angeles and delayed 20 minutes by an NFL game, opened with Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter performing "Bring Your Love." The pair later won best collaboration for the track, and Madonna separately received the artist of the year award. She also teamed up with Charli xcx for a reworked performance of "Danceteria."
Snoop Dogg hosted the ceremony. LISA won best pop for "Dream," while Kacey Musgraves paid tribute to country legend Dolly Parton, who died in August, with a cover of "I Will Always Love You." Other performers included Raye, Bruno Mars and Shaboozey, alongside a tribute to George Michael, who died a decade ago.
The night's Video Vanguard Award went to Nirvana, presented by Public Enemy's Chuck D and accepted by surviving members Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl and Pat Smear.
