Tamberi wins fourth European high jump title after 2.32m clearance

The men's high jump final at the European Athletics Championships ended with Gianmarco Tamberi on top. The Italian veteran cleared 2.32 metres and claimed his fourth continental title, ahead of Ukraine's Oleh Doroshchuk and compatriot Matteo Sioli. Doroshchuk took silver with 2.30 metres, while Sioli's best clearance was 2.27 metres.

The medal contenders separated early. Once the bar reached 2.27 metres, only Doroshchuk, Sioli and Tamberi managed to get over. For Tamberi, that clearance was also a season best. At 2.30 metres, Doroshchuk succeeded with his first attempt, while both Italians missed. Tamberi converted his second attempt, but Sioli was eliminated after his initial failure and took bronze.

At 2.32 metres, Doroshchuk was close to a breakthrough but clipped the bar with his heels. Tamberi's first jump was decent but not enough. The Ukrainian failed again on his second try, while the Italian went clear. Doroshchuk missed on his final attempt as well, allowing Tamberi to celebrate his fourth European gold. The 34-year-old Italian had arrived at the event ranked only 56th in this season's lists. Britain's Kimani Jack and Joel Clarke-Kahn completed the top five, both recording 2.23 metres.
