Tallinn finalizes preliminary design for Väike-Ameerika street overhaul
Tallinn's city government has completed a preliminary design for reconstructing Väike-Ameerika tänav and part of Luha tänav, to be presented to residents on October 7. The plan turns the existing five-way intersection into a roundabout doubling as a public square.
Tallinn's city government has finished a preliminary design for the reconstruction of Väike-Ameerika tänav and a section of Luha tänav, with the plan set to be presented on October 7.
The reconstruction covers Väike-Ameerika tänav from Pärnu maantee to Tehnika tänav, plus the stretch of Luha tänav between Väike-Ameerika tänav and Koidu tänav.
Intersection to become a square
The current five-way intersection will be replaced with a roundabout that is also designed to function as a public square. Surfaces at intersection points will be raised to slow traffic down.
Two-way traffic retained
Väike-Ameerika tänav will keep two-way traffic, though the roadway between Toom-Kuninga tänav and Virmalise tänav will be narrowed to free up more space for pedestrians. Planners had earlier considered making that stretch one-way to widen the pedestrian area near the Toom-Kuninga intersection, but ultimately decided against it once the preliminary design was drawn up. The roadway fronting buildings at Väike-Ameerika tänav 11, 13 and 15 will also be narrowed, down to four meters.
The project includes 61 parking spaces and three short-term stopping spots near Tallinn University of Applied Sciences. Trees, shrubs and low vegetation will be added along the streets as well.
Most of the project area will have a 30 km/h speed limit, dropping to 20 km/h at local junctions, including where Väike-Ameerika tänav meets Luha tänav and Kesk-Ameerika tänav. Bus route No. 32 will also be rerouted to run along Tehnika tänav.
