A taxi driver in Riga has received a prison sentence for fleeing the scene of a road accident after crashing into several parked cars during a nighttime ride.

The incident took place on a spring night, when the man, driving a taxi with a passenger inside, collided with multiple vehicles parked on the street. The crash left the passenger injured. Instead of remaining at the scene, reporting the accident, and providing assistance to the injured person as required by law, the driver abandoned the car and hid in nearby bushes.

Court ruling

After reviewing the case, the court found the driver's actions to constitute a criminal offence — fleeing the scene of an accident — and sentenced him to imprisonment. Under Latvian law, anyone involved in a road accident is obliged to stay at the scene, report the incident, and, if necessary, provide first aid to those injured. Failing to meet this obligation is treated as a separate violation that can be punished regardless of how the underlying accident occurred.

The case serves as a reminder that fleeing the scene of a traffic accident is treated as a serious offence in Latvia and can result in a custodial sentence. Details of the case stem from a court ruling that has since become publicly available.

No further details about the driver's identity, the exact length of the sentence, or the number of vehicles damaged were disclosed in the available information.
