Bandaged Right Legs in Thailand Explained: Hot Scooter Exhaust Pipes
A Turkish tourist on holiday in Thailand noticed many people with a bandaged right leg, and his question on the social platform X drew wide attention. Commenters explained the cause: burns from scooter exhaust pipes.

A tourist from Turkey who travelled to Thailand on holiday noticed an unusual sight: many people, both locals and visitors, had a bandage on the right leg specifically. Unable to work out why, he decided to ask about it on the social network X, and the post quickly drew attention.
The observation was shared on 20 October by the account “DarkWeb Haber”. The post gathered more than 1.9 million views.
A simple explanation
In the comments, users pointed out that the cause is quite ordinary: the hot exhaust pipes of scooters and motorcycles. In Thailand, scooters are a very common way of getting around, and tourists often rent them too.
Inexperienced riders who wear shorts are particularly at risk. When getting off the vehicle, they often touch the heated pipe by accident. Because on many scooters the exhaust pipe is on the right-hand side, the right leg is most often the one that gets burned.
Personal experience
Several commenters also shared their own experiences. One user admitted to suffering a very painful burn after putting his right foot down on the ground.
The puzzling sight noticed by the Turkish tourist thus turned out to be linked to scooter use rather than to anything else happening in Thailand.
