Świątek advances to third round in Cincinnati with dominant win

Poland's Iga Świątek cruised past Colombia's Emiliana Arango in the second round of the Cincinnati tournament. She will face Greece's Maria Sakkari next.

World number five Iga Świątek of Poland defeated Colombia's Emiliana Arango 6:3, 6:0 in the second round of the Cincinnati tournament. Arango has previously reached as high as 46th in the world rankings.

Notably, before the match it was not Świątek but the 25-year-old American who was considered the clear favorite, with bookmakers offering odds of just 1.02 on her victory.

Match statistics

Świątek dominated in nearly every statistical category. She won 72% of points on her first serve compared to Arango's 41%, and 56% on her second serve compared to 31%. Overall, Świątek won 61 points to her opponent's 32, and converted five of six break points, while Arango managed just one of four. Aces stood at 2 for Świątek and 0 for Arango, while both players had 3 double faults.

The victory extends Świątek's head-to-head record against Arango to 2-0.

The Polish player is competing in Cincinnati for the seventh time, with her best result being the title she won there in 2025. In the third round, she will face Greece's Maria Sakkari, ranked 33rd.

As previously reported, Świątek recently also triumphed at the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto.

Other players who advanced to the third round in Cincinnati include Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina, American Coco Gauff, and Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk.
