Sunrisers Leeds move into second place as Birmingham Phoenix are eliminated

Sunrisers Leeds secured a commanding 45-run victory over Birmingham Phoenix at Edgbaston, a result that lifted them to second place in The Hundred men's competition table while ending Phoenix's hopes of progressing further in the tournament.

Having been asked to bat first, Sunrisers posted 169-7 from their 100 balls. Opener Ryan Rickelton was the standout performer, striking 65 runs off just 37 deliveries, including six fours and three sixes. He built an opening stand of 52 with Mitch Marsh before adding a further 42 runs alongside Harry Brook. Rickelton was eventually run out with seven balls remaining in the innings, becoming the third of four wickets to fall in the final 15 runs.

For Phoenix, off-spinner Usman Tariq claimed two wickets, dismissing tournament leading run-scorer Marsh and having England white-ball captain Brook adjudged lbw.

Chasing the target, Phoenix were unable to keep pace with the required run rate. Brydon Carse and Matthew Potts were the pick of the Sunrisers bowlers, each taking three wickets. Carse struck twice during the powerplay and added a third victim later in the innings, while Sean Dickson top-scored for Phoenix with 34 before being caught in the deep. Potts then removed the last two Phoenix batters with successive deliveries to seal the result.

The win moved Sunrisers up from fifth to second in the standings, overtaking MI London and Welsh Fire on net run rate, with Manchester Super Giants sitting four points behind that group. Birmingham Phoenix, with just one win from six games, remain bottom of the table and join London Spirit as the second team eliminated from the competition, with all sides having now played six matches.
