At least two killed in blast at Bolivian military barracks
An explosion at an artillery barracks in Viacha, Bolivia, has killed at least two people and injured dozens, with health officials fearing the death toll could rise to as many as 15.
An explosion at a military barracks in Bolivia has left at least two people dead, according to Defence Minister Ernesto Justiniano, who said at least 58 others were injured in the incident.
The blast occurred on Friday afternoon at barracks housing an artillery regiment in Viacha, a town roughly 30km from the capital, La Paz. Officials said the explosion was caused by pyrotechnic material stored at the site.
Death toll could rise
Health official Rita Nebraska told local television that between 10 and 15 people were believed to have died, though only two deaths have so far been officially confirmed. Emergency crews are continuing to search through rubble for victims.
Homes damaged, further explosion feared
Police said dozens of nearby homes sustained damage, mostly shattered windows. Nebraska warned of the risk of another explosion and urged residents to keep at least 150 metres away from the base.
Police spokesman Roger Roca told AFP that fireworks had been stored at the barracks and that the cause of the blast is still under investigation.
Local authorities in Viacha have declared three days of mourning.
