Spotify to roll out labels flagging AI-generated artists
Spotify will begin marking artist accounts that are AI creations rather than real people, starting with self-declared tags in August and platform-applied labels appearing to listeners from mid-September. The move responds to a growing wave of AI-generated music on the service.

Spotify has announced a new labeling system meant to give listeners more clarity about which artist accounts are genuinely human and which are generative AI creations. Starting August 11, artists can voluntarily mark their own accounts as an "AI Persona" through the Spotify for Artists portal, openly disclosing that the account isn't a real person.
How the system works
Self-declared accounts will carry the "AI Persona" label. Beyond that, Spotify will combine human review with AI-powered detection to flag accounts it suspects are AI-generated but haven't disclosed it, applying a "Likely AI Persona" badge instead. Account holders will be notified when this badge is applied, and an appeals process will be available if they believe it was applied in error.
The labels themselves will start appearing to listeners in mid-September. Initially, they'll show up on mobile, on an artist's profile page, in search results, and in the track rows of playlists.
Effect on recommendations
By default, content from accounts labeled as AI Personas will be excluded from Spotify's personalized recommendation features.
The move highlights the dual approach many tech companies are taking toward AI: Spotify is expanding tools that help identify AI-generated content for artists and listeners alike, even as it continues integrating various generative and agentic AI features into its own service.
