A consortium comprising Spanish companies IDOM, Consulting, Engineering, Architecture and Ingeniería y Economía del Transporte (INECO) has initiated arbitration proceedings against Latvia, seeking more than €14 million in damages. The claim arises from the termination of a contract for the design of the main Rail Baltica line section passing through Riga.

The news was reported by the LETA agency, citing representatives of RB Rail, the joint venture of the Baltic states responsible for implementing the Rail Baltica project. The Spanish firms argue that the contract was terminated without valid grounds, causing them significant financial losses, including costs already incurred and lost profits.

This development marks a new chapter in the ongoing Rail Baltica project, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at linking the Baltic states with the European rail network. The Riga section is a critical component of the route, and the halt in its design work could affect the overall timeline of the project. The consortium's legal action underscores the financial and contractual disputes that can arise in large-scale cross-border ventures.
