Finnish court rejects Russian family's asylum appeal despite mother's cancer diagnosis
A Finnish court has rejected an appeal by the family of Russian national Valentin Sergienko against a Migri decision denying them political asylum, even though his mother has since been diagnosed with cancer. The family must report to police on August 14 or risk forced removal from Finland.
A Finnish court has dismissed an appeal filed by the family of Russian national Valentin Sergienko against a decision by Finland's migration service, Migri, to refuse them political asylum. Former St. Petersburg municipal deputy Svetlana Utkina shared the news with the outlet Mediazona.
Sergienko fled Russia together with his parents shortly after the Kremlin announced mobilization in September 2022. The family first applied for asylum in Germany, but their case was later transferred to Finland, where they relocated in 2023.
Migri justified its refusal by arguing that Sergienko's political activity was not extensive or public enough to have drawn the personal attention of Russian authorities.
Donations and protest participation cited
Despite this, Finnish migration authorities had established that Sergienko donated to the Anti-Corruption Foundation and to OVD-Info — an independent Russian human rights group that Russian authorities labeled "extremist" in June 2026 — along with other opposition organizations, and that he had taken part in protests.
The family is now required to report to police on August 14. Should they fail to leave Finland voluntarily, they face the risk of forced deportation.
Utkina also noted that after settling in Finland, Sergienko's mother was diagnosed with cancer and subsequently underwent surgery and chemotherapy.
