Finnish President: China Has Warned Russia Against Using Nuclear Weapons

Finnish President Alexander Stubb told the German newspaper "Bild" that China has taken a clear stance against the possibility of Russia using nuclear weapons. According to Stubb, he was personally assured of this by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during a meeting this summer.

Stubb quoted the Chinese diplomat as saying Beijing "will never allow this" to happen, referring to the use of nuclear weapons. The Finnish head of state described China's position as a fairly strong and effective factor that could deter Russia from taking such a step.

China's role in the international dynamic

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, China has sought to present itself as neutral, or at least restrained, while maintaining close economic and political ties with Russia. Stubb's remarks suggest that Beijing is working behind closed doors to influence Moscow's actions, including on matters related to nuclear weapons threats.

The Finnish president's comments indicate that Western leaders are closely tracking not only public statements but also private signals from senior Chinese officials regarding Russia's conduct of the war in Ukraine. Stubb, who has been one of the more active European leaders on security issues, characterized China's position positively, emphasizing its potential role in restraining any escalation by Russia.
