Serious crash on P16 road near Mazsalaca blocks traffic

A serious road accident took place on Sunday, 11 October, on the Valmiera–Matīši–Mazsalaca regional road (P16) in Latvia, at the 29th kilometre. Traffic on this section is blocked, so drivers need to use other routes.

What is known about the crash

Video filmed by eyewitnesses shows two passenger cars badly damaged in the collision. Emergency medical teams and personnel of the State Fire and Rescue Service are working at the scene.

It is not yet known whether anyone was injured in the crash. The circumstances and cause of the accident have also not been disclosed.

Traffic restrictions and detours

Latvijas Valsts ceļi, the company that manages Latvia's state roads, said on the social network X that traffic on the P16 is blocked. The State Police were also notified of the incident.

Drivers are advised to consider these possible detours:

  • P15 Ainaži–Matīši;
  • V123 Ārciems–Puikule–Urga–Braslava;
  • V164 Estonian border (Ramata)–Mazsalaca–Vilzēni–Dikļi.
