Slavoj Žižek: Zoran Mamdani Offers a New 'American Dream'

Francis Fukuyama's 1990s thesis of the “end of history” long united the West with the belief that liberal democracy and capitalism were the best possible social order. However, that narrative collapsed after 2001, leading to an era of brutal pragmatism.

Since then, the only clearly articulated worldviews came from “Trumpists” and far-right European nationalists, who saw the West as a unique, threatened civilization. The so-called “woke” worldview, while criticized by nationalists, appealed only to a narrow segment of society.

Now, marking the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence, New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani, a prominent democratic socialist, has offered a radically different interpretation of what America is and could become. Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek, analyzing this development, suggests Mamdani's proposal may serve as a new unifying story, replacing both Fukuyama's optimistic liberalism and the nationalist narrative of threat.
