Woman who dodged prison sentence gets extra 50 days in Jelgava
A court in Jelgava has found Sintija K. guilty of evading a prison sentence for theft and ordered an additional 50 days behind bars.

A ruling by the Zemgale Regional Court in Jelgava has taken effect, finding Sintija K. guilty of evading a custodial sentence. She had previously been given a prison term for a petty theft, but failed to report to begin serving it. Now she has been handed an additional 50 days in prison.
The case goes back to 20 March 2023, when around 10 a.m. the woman went to a supermarket and, driven by greed, decided to steal a number of items. She took 0.357 kilograms of "Talsu ritulis sarkanais" cheese worth €3.96, a 4x85 gram pack of "Sheba Duet" cat food worth €3.03, 0.485 kilograms of packaged chicken ham worth €4.25, 0.570 kilograms of smoked chicken legs worth €4.67, a 250-gram jar of "Vecrīga" sprats worth €2.69, two 0.7-litre bottles of "Tullamore Dew" whiskey at €16.03 each, and a one-litre bottle of "Jim Beam" whiskey worth €26.99. She left through the checkout zone without paying. The total damage to the store was €77.65.
Although the stolen goods were not especially valuable, the offence led to a prison sentence. Because Sintija K. avoided serving that sentence, she faced a new prosecution. The latest court decision means she will now have to spend an additional 50 days in prison on top of the earlier term.
