Simpson avenges only career loss with rematch win over Williamson

Callum Simpson has reclaimed the British and Commonwealth super-middleweight titles after a unanimous decision win over Troy Williamson in Leeds, avenging the only loss of his professional career.

Williamson had stopped Simpson in the 10th round back in December in an upset result. This time, the judges scored the rematch in Simpson's favour: 116-112, 117-112 and 115-113.

The 29-year-old Simpson, now working under new trainer Rob McCracken, shook Williamson with a heavy right hand in the third round. Williamson, 34, absorbed the pressure and landed his own blow in the eighth round, then pushed hard in the final round knowing only a knockout would save him. His late surge fell short, and Simpson improved his professional record to 19 wins against a single defeat.

After the fight, Simpson revealed that during the first encounter he had perforated both eardrums in the opening round, leaving him simply trying to survive rather than compete. He said he made no excuses afterward, instead using the setback to come back stronger and better prepared.

Simpson's promoter, Ben Shalom, described the contest as unbelievable and praised Williamson, whose record now stands at 22 wins, five losses and one draw, for continuing to press forward throughout the fight. Shalom said he believes Simpson is now positioned to challenge for a world title and hopes to arrange that opportunity within the next year.
