Latvian goaltender Arturs Silovs made 27 saves on Friday in a National Hockey League (NHL, North America's top professional ice hockey league) regular-season game, including a stop on a penalty shot, but his team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, lost 5-2 (2-1, 0-3, 0-1) away to the Colorado Avalanche. Pittsburgh has now lost five of its last six games.

Silovs stopped 27 of the 32 shots he faced, a save rate of 84%.

How the game unfolded

In the first half of the opening period, the Penguins scored twice within about 30 seconds, with Bryan Rust and Evgeni Malkin putting the puck past the home goaltender. The Avalanche answered with a goal from Artturi Lehkonen.

In the first minute of the second period, Lehkonen tied the score, beating the Latvian goaltender for the second time in the game. Nearly four minutes later, Colorado was awarded a penalty shot, but Silovs denied Nathan MacKinnon.

Just 15 seconds after that save, the hosts took the lead through Gabriel Landeskog. Later in the period, Terry Jonathan Hughes doubled the Avalanche advantage.

With under five minutes left in regulation, MacKinnon scored against Pittsburgh on a power play. He finished the game with four points (one goal and three assists).
