In the opening stage of the WRC Rally Sardinia, Latvian driver Mārtiņš Sesks and his co-driver Renārs Francis finished in 13th place. Sesks admitted afterward that he had driven too wide in several sections, which affected his time — it was not the fastest on the stage. However, he noted that this driving style likely pleased spectators watching along the route.

Among the title contenders, Solberg posted the fastest time in the opening stage, finishing 0.8 seconds ahead of Sebastien Ogier. Elfyn Evans, meanwhile, lost 1.1 seconds on the stage.

Decisive day ahead

The real fight for the rally win and championship points is expected on Friday, when drivers will tackle six stages totaling 119 kilometers. The first Friday stage is scheduled to start at 09:01 Latvian time.

Heading into this decisive stage, Evans leads the overall standings with a 17-point advantage over Sami Pajari and a 21-point lead over Solberg. As the top three in the standings, these drivers will be first on track on Friday, meaning they will have to clear debris from the road for the rest of the field, which could affect their times.
