The Office actor Lucy Davis reveals incurable stage four breast cancer
Actor Lucy Davis, known for playing Dawn Tinsley in the British version of The Office, has revealed she has incurable stage four breast cancer that was diagnosed a year and a half ago and has since spread to her bones.
Lucy Davis, the 53-year-old actor best known for playing receptionist Dawn Tinsley in the original British version of The Office, announced on Tuesday that she has been living with incurable stage four breast cancer.
Davis said she was diagnosed a year and a half ago and that the cancer has since spread to her bones, including her spine, right hip and ribs. She said the disease was caught too late for chemotherapy to be an option.
In a post on Instagram, the actor said she is trying to make the most of whatever time she has left and find joy where she can. She described experiencing significant pain that sometimes makes standing or walking difficult, meaning she occasionally needs to use a wheelchair.
Finding comfort in humour
Davis, the daughter of comedian Jasper Carrott, said humour has been one of the things that has helped her most through the experience. She has asked friends and family to joke with her rather than treat her as unwell, saying that being treated like a sick person only makes a person feel worse.
She said she is not afraid of what comes next and feels at peace with her situation, adding that any grief over her illness falls hardest on her family rather than on herself.
Davis rose to fame playing Dawn in the original version of The Office, set among the staff of the fictional Slough paper company Wernham Hogg, alongside the show's co-creator Ricky Gervais, who played manager David Brent. She also played Hayley Jordan on BBC Radio 4's The Archers for nearly a decade, appeared in the 2004 film Shaun of the Dead alongside Simon Pegg, and starred in the Netflix series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
She said she intends to keep working for animal rights causes and hopes to continue acting, a career she described as one of the greatest joys of her life.
