Set designer Monika Korpa presents herself as a visual artist in Chekhov Theatre gallery show
The Chekhov Theatre gallery is hosting an exhibition by set designer Monika Korpa titled 'untitled No. 20' until December 2, an unusual format for an artist used to working on theatre stages.

An exhibition titled 'untitled No. 20' by set designer Monika Korpa is on view at the Chekhov Theatre gallery until December 2. Korpa admits that a gallery exhibition is a fairly unusual format for her, since her everyday work as a theatre artist involves shaping the visual space of stage productions rather than presenting standalone artworks in a gallery setting.
An unusual creative challenge
Speaking to Latvijas Radio's programme 'Kultūras rondo', Korpa explained what prompted her to take on this creative challenge and step outside her usual work in theatre set design. She compares the exhibition space to a small stage, noting that arranging a gallery show requires an approach to space and composition similar to what is needed when working with a theatre stage.
The exhibition 'untitled No. 20' will remain open to visitors at the Chekhov Theatre gallery for several months, running through December 2, giving those interested ample time to discover the artist's work outside the usual theatre context.
