Salacgrīva marks anniversary of Japanese-style nobori-gama kiln
For twenty years, the Latvian town of Salacgrīva has operated a Japanese-style nobori-gama ceramics kiln built by ceramicist Imants Klīdzējs, and the town will soon get a second fire sculpture of this kind.
The town of Salacgrīva is marking a milestone this year: for two decades it has been home to a Japanese-style ceramics kiln known as nobori-gama (Naborigama), originally built by ceramicist Imants Klīdzējs.
The kiln is fired for several days at high temperatures, during which works by both Latvian and foreign artists are baked inside it. What makes the process distinctive is its unpredictability — it is impossible to know how the finished pieces will look until the kiln is finally opened.
A second fire sculpture
To mark the kiln's anniversary, Salacgrīva plans to create a second fire sculpture of this kind, adding to the town's visual identity and continuing the story connected to ceramic art and the nobori-gama tradition.
