Saeima Adopts New Immigration Law – Stricter Control and New Requirements
Latvia's parliament, the Saeima, has passed a new Immigration Law in its final reading, introducing stricter migration control, expanded oversight of third-country nationals, and new integration requirements.

On Wednesday, June 11, the Saeima approved a new Immigration Law in its final reading, marking a significant overhaul of the existing regulatory framework. The new legislation introduces tighter migration controls, expanded surveillance of third-country nationals, and additional integration requirements.
According to Latvijas radio, the law aims to enhance security and improve the management of immigration processes. The changes affect entry rules, residence permit issuance, and deportation procedures.
Third-country nationals will face stricter criteria for obtaining residence permits, including mandatory language and integration tests. Meanwhile, the state will gain broader powers to monitor foreign nationals and impose penalties for non-compliance.
The law will come into force after its publication in the official gazette 'Latvijas Vēstnesis', though the exact date has not yet been announced. Experts suggest the changes could impact labor migration and family reunification processes.
