On Wednesday, June 11, the Saeima (Latvian parliament) adopted a new Immigration Law in its final reading, introducing significant changes to the country's migration framework. The new law provides for stricter control over immigration processes, expanded monitoring of third-country nationals, and additional integration requirements for newcomers.

Drafting of the law began during the previous parliamentary term, with the aim of enhancing national security, reducing fictitious immigration and illegal employment, while also aligning Latvian legislation with the latest European Union migration standards.

The Immigration Law is part of broader efforts to improve migration management and ensure that foreigners' stay in Latvia complies with legal norms and national interests. It includes measures such as intensified supervision of third-country nationals residing in Latvia, as well as clearer integration criteria, including language learning and familiarization with Latvian society.

After several readings, the law was approved and will come into force following its publication in the official gazette. Experts note that the law may affect employers, foreign students, and entrepreneurs wishing to enter and stay in Latvia.
