Saeima debates law on developing Latvia's eastern region

Latvian parliament members met in Krāslava to discuss a bill supporting businesses and investment in Latgale and the Alūksne region, but disagreements remain over how wide the law's territory should be. The debate is complicated by requests from Jēkabpils and several Vidzeme municipalities to be included.

Members of the Saeima, Latvia's parliament, gathered in Krāslava on Friday, August 7, to discuss a draft law aimed at developing the eastern part of the country. The bill envisions support for entrepreneurs, investment attraction, and the creation of new jobs in the Latgale region and the Alūksne district.

Disputes over the territory's boundaries

The discussion revealed disagreements over how extensive the area covered by the law should be. Jēkabpils and several municipalities from the Vidzeme region have expressed interest in joining the initiative, raising questions about where exactly the law's boundaries should be drawn.

Alongside the territorial question, the financial side of the plan also came under discussion, since delivering on the promised support depends heavily on available funding. Overall, it appears the bill's further progress will hinge on resolving both money and border issues.
